One of the greatest forces on earth is the power of human connection. We were made
to live life alongside one another—in community and relationship. Keeli Walker knows
more than most not only how important finding that connection is, but also how
challenging it can be for a family whose journey has been impacted by medical
complexity.
“Not many people understand how different your life becomes after your child becomes
diagnosed with a chronic illness,” Keeli shared. “We had to change our diets, routines,
schedules, everything.”
Keeli is mom to five-year-old Rory. When she was three years old, Rory was diagnosed
with Idiopathic Nephrotic Syndrome associated with diffuse mesangial hypercellularity.
This condition causes her kidneys to leak protein into her urine, along with high
cholesterol, high blood pressure, and other challenging symptoms. Rory has also been
diagnosed with Mosaic Turner syndrome, a condition that affects growth and comes
with a range of potential health concerns that will require ongoing monitoring throughout
her life.
In the midst of navigating these medical challenges, the Walker family found a source of
connection and support through Wichita’s Littlest Heroes in January 2024. More than
just a charitable organization, Wichita’s Littlest Heroes strives to be a community that
feels like family—and for Keeli, that mission became reality.
“They’ve (Wichita’s Littlest Heroes) provided financial support to us in times of need and
events for both of my daughters to socialize and have fun,” Keeli said. She went on to
share how WLH events create space not only for Rory to be included and connect with
children whose journeys resemble hers, but also for their seven-year-old daughter,
Adeline.
“They’ve allowed our entire family to participate in events and feel included in Rory’s
journey,” Keeli said. “But most importantly, we’ve connected with families, who have
similar lifestyles to ours. It’s been incredibly reassuring to have a community of families
who have also had to rearrange their lives. Wichita’s Littlest Heroes has given me hope
and a sense of community and support at the most stressful time of my life. I know that I
can count on their team as well as the other parents to walk alongside us on this
journey.”
In the midst of uncertainty, families like the Walkers remind us of the strength that
comes from shared experience—and the healing that grows in the space of
understanding and support.
